![]() “Power lines had to be washed by the 30th CES, fiber paths had to be repaired or replaced by the 30th Space Communications Squadron, and we, the 30th LCG, assessed the launch facilities and associated launch infrastructure, ensuring a safe and stable power and environmental condition for satellites and the Atlas V booster.”Īll of the hard work and communication from Team V personnel paid off, as their efforts culminated in bringing Vandenberg’s range back online. “The 30th Mission Support Group, Operations Group, Launch Group, and many other units across the base have been working hard since the fire to get their systems back to a launch configuration,” said Kelly. ![]() Once the plan was developed, several units joined forces to clean up the mess left behind by the fire, and once again begin preparations for an upcoming launch. Gerardo Lopez, 4th SLS launch mission manager. “A team of stakeholders from across the base formed the Recovery Working Group, which prioritized recovery efforts and developed the recovery plan to get through the next several scheduled launches,” said Capt. Furthermore, many range assets were affected by power outages or by fire retardant and had to be assessed, repaired and tested.”ĭespite the potentially catastrophic scenario, Vandenberg personnel persevered and succeeded in their recovery efforts. “To mitigate power losses, members of the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron brought up the South Vandenberg Power Plant as they washed and repaired several sections of power lines. Sean Kelly, 4th Space Launch Squadron system infrastructure and facilities engineering chief. “The fire caused many power outages on South Vandenberg, reducing redundancy and threatening the health and safety of an $800 million commercial mission,” said Capt. Getting the range operational again was no easy task, as a recent wildland fire on South Vandenberg threatened both base personnel and an upcoming mission. By Launching children, I believe we are strengthening characters, providing a different perception of their world and opening eyes and minds to the possibility of success. Thanks to concentrated efforts from Team V and community partners, the Vandenberg range is once again “green” – or ready for launch. Think about the importance of the activities in your life and how they (the coaches, the teachers, your teammates) impacted you. By giving from One to One, the sponsorship impacts the child in more ways than monetarily it provides self-confidence, unique opportunities for enrichment and the ability to help shape another child’s worldview. ![]() Allow people who want to impact a child the opportunity to give back directly over and over again. As a young girl, my family too, struggled to make ends meet, which kept me from participating in a number of extracurricular activities. Why? Because I saw myself in that family. I knew then that I wanted to make a difference with more than just one child. It was an amazing feeling to know that another little girl, the same age as my own now had the same opportunity to discover their spark. That evening we purchased the equipment for the child along with our daughters to begin the season. Upon learning about the situation, my husband and I asked for the sizes of the child, their snack assignment and a request to be kept anonymous. I didn’t realize how much of a financial burden it was for a family on our team until the coach brought it to my attention while walking to our cars. At the end of her first practice, the coach explained to the team what gear was necessary, who would provide the snacks for the team each week and the cost of pictures. It became clear to me that Launchpad was necessary when my daughter, 5 years old at the time, began her first season of soccer. To provide children the opportunity to be a success, no matter their current circumstance. The purpose of Launchpad is to do just that. When children are exposed to various activities that provide confidence boosting opportunities, teamwork and access to strong, encouraging adults, it is proven that they are much more likely to be a success. Children in at-risk, underprivileged or foster care living situations need the community to wrap their arms around them and help them thrive more than ever. Launchpad was created out of an unmet need, not only in our community, but all over the world.
